The Legal Counsel role is pivotal in providing comprehensive legal support and establishing the legal function within the organisation. The position involves acting as the primary legal advisor to senior management and key business units, ensuring legal compliance and mitigating risks across multiple jurisdictions.

Role Overview

The Legal Counsel reports directly to senior management and will be responsible for developing the legal framework, advising on complex contractual and regulatory issues, and managing external counsel. Success in this role means ensuring the legal integrity of operations while enabling strategic business growth, particularly across diverse geographic regions. The incumbent will collaborate with internal teams and external regulators, contributing to the development of robust legal SOPs and policies in a highly regulated environment.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Manage legal strategy, frameworks, and policy implementation
  • Draft and negotiate complex commercial agreements including trust deeds, referral agreements, and vendor contracts
  • Monitor and interpret evolving laws across jurisdictions including Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Switzerland, and potentially Thailand and Malaysia
  • Provide legal support for regulatory compliance and liaise with external bodies such as MAS
  • Oversee dispute resolution activities and manage external legal counsel

  • Proficiency in Chinese (Cantonese and/or Mandarin)

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement legal SOPs and playbooks to standardise processes and manage risk
  • Act as the principal legal advisor to senior management and business units
  • Manage governance of internal policies and ensure legal soundness of policy changes
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments in all operating jurisdictions
  • Serve as a point of contact for regulatory agencies and manage compliance interactions
  • Identify legal risks and provide mitigation frameworks
  • Prepare legal opinions, board papers, and briefing notes
  • Oversee contentious issues including dispute resolution and external counsel management
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support new initiatives and market expansion
  • Support the Data Protection Officer in compliance with data privacy laws

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above in Law, qualified as a solicitor or barrister in Singapore, Hong Kong, or a common law jurisdiction
  • 8-12 years’ post-qualification experience in law firms or reputable financial institutions, with a focus on insurance law or regulatory work
  • Strong knowledge of Singapore and Hong Kong insurance law and regulation
  • Experience managing complex contracts and regulatory matters
  • Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in Chinese advantageous
  • Right to work in applicable jurisdictions
  • On-site, based in Singapore
