Overview
We're looking for a seasoned underwriting professional to lead high-value life insurance underwriting for our Bermuda HNW/UHNW book. You'll take ownership of complex cases from start to finish — medical, financial, and due diligence review — while acting as a trusted advisor to less experienced underwriters and a key liaison with reinsurance partners.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting
- Own full-cycle underwriting decisions for Bermuda policies within your delegated authority
- Handle sizeable, intricate HNW/UHNW submissions, including cross-border ownership structures and large face amounts
- Evaluate medical and financial risk factors — source of wealth, insurable interest, layered ownership arrangements
- Interpret clinical records (attending physician statements, labs, specialist evaluations) to reach sound underwriting conclusions
- Design evidence-gathering approaches tailored to complex submissions
- Produce clear, defensible underwriting rationale that holds up against internal guidelines and regulatory expectations
Claims & policy servicing
- Weigh in on claims reviews, revisiting original underwriting decisions where relevant
- Evaluate policy changes after issuance to confirm they remain consistent with underwriting standards
Risk oversight
- Flag red flags around fraud or anti-selection early
- Analyze portfolio metrics (loss ratios, expense ratios, etc.) and translate findings into actionable recommendations for senior leadership
- Keep your case queue moving to meet turnaround targets
Relationship management
- Work closely with brokers, distribution partners, and case managers to structure complicated cases
- Deliver underwriting outcomes with clarity and professionalism
Mentorship
- Coach junior underwriters through difficult case scenarios
- Help build out best practices and shared underwriting knowledge across the team
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree (Business, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, or similar fields preferred)
- 10 or more years in life underwriting, including a minimum of 4 years focused on HNW or large-case work
- A recognized life insurance credential (FLMI, ALU, or equivalent)
- Established experience collaborating with reinsurers, legal, compliance, and distribution channels (agency, bancassurance, brokerage)
- Strong written and spoken English
- Solid Microsoft Office skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Exposure to multi-jurisdictional or offshore insurance markets is a plus
