Overview

We are seeking an Underwriter specialising in Construction to support profitable growth across complex regional construction and engineering risks. This role will suit an underwriter with less than 10 years’ experience who combines strong technical judgement with commercial acumen and a collaborative approach to brokers, clients and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite Construction and Engineering risks (including CAR/EAR, infrastructure and major projects) within agreed underwriting authority and pricing frameworks.
  • Assess submissions, determine terms and conditions, structure coverage, and negotiate with brokers to secure profitable business.
  • Partner with risk engineering and claims teams to evaluate exposures, loss trends and risk improvements.
  • Support portfolio management by monitoring aggregate exposures, accumulations, wordings and profitability.
  • Contribute to business development by identifying opportunities, maintaining broker relationships and supporting renewal and new business strategies.
  • Ensure underwriting and documentation comply with internal governance, regulatory requirements and best practice.

Requirements

  • 5-8 years' relevant experience in (re)insurance underwriting in Construction, or relevant working experience in related Engineering field. Open to undewriting experience within other lines of business (Property, Liabilities, etc.).
  • Engineering academic background (e.g., civil, structural, mechanical) with sound technical and industry knowledge.
  • Alternative backgrounds considered: risk engineer or loss adjuster with demonstrated capability to transition into underwriting.
  • Strong technical understanding of construction methodologies, contract structures, project stakeholders and key risk drivers (e.g., delay in start-up, NAT CAT, subcontractor exposures).
  • Sound knowledge of policy wordings, reinsurance structures, pricing principles and underwriting governance.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and ability to make defensible risk decisions under time pressure.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with brokers and clients.
  • Language skills are a plus: Mandarin Chinese, Thai, Indonesian or other regional languages.
